SMS Compliance Requirements

Why This Matters

Your ReviewCatalyst SMS messages are sent from a verified toll-free number managed under your account. Carrier complaints and filtering issues route back to that number. Keeping your messages compliant protects your number from suspension and ensures review requests reach your customers.

Required: Enable Opt-Out Message

Follow these steps to confirm your opt-out message is active:

Log into your ReviewCatalyst dashboard at app.reviewcatalyst.net
Navigate to Campaigns
Select your campaign
Click the Appearance tab
Scroll to the Advanced section
Find “Include opt-out message” and confirm the toggle is ON (blue)

Warning: This toggle must remain ON at all times. Sending SMS without opt-out language violates carrier requirements and may result in your toll-free number being blocked.

What You Can Control

The only part of your SMS message you write is the opening text before the review link. Keep it natural and conversational:

Use your customer’s first name when possible
Keep it brief and friendly — one to two sentences is ideal
Avoid promotional language such as “free”, “special offer”, or “limited time”
Do not use ALL CAPS or excessive punctuation (!!!)

Approved Message Example

Here is a compliant message template you can follow:

From [Business Name]

Hi [Name], thanks for visiting us! We’d really appreciate it if you could share your experience with a quick review.

[Review link added automatically]

Reply STOP to opt out.

Note: The review link and opt-out text are added automatically by ReviewCatalyst when your opt-out toggle is enabled. You only need to write the opening line.

What Happens Without Compliance

If your messages do not meet carrier and regulatory standards, you risk:

Messages filtered to spam by Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile
Toll-free number flagged or suspended by Twilio
Legal exposure under TCPA regulations
Account review by ReviewCatalyst
